Class 1  •  September 23
                         Japanese “Book of Great Happiness”
This hanging structure was first used in shops in Japan to record what items had sold that day.
We’ll use inks and brushes to fill ours with illustrations and maybe learn some Kanji characters!

Class 2  •  October 7
                           Totem Poles of Our Own
Did you know North American totem poles tell stories? We’ll read about the cultures which make them and make our own while practicing paper cutting skills and sequencing events.

Class 3  •  October 21
                           Girdle Book
These cloth-covered books that hung from your belt were all the rage with the V.I.P.s of Medieval Europe. We’ll even practice simple sewing with a plastic needle and string!

Class 4  •  November 4
                          Secrets of the Incan Quipu
This ancient structure from what is now South America was used to tell stories and pass on secret messages through a language of knots and colors. Kids will count, add, practice knot-making and baffle parents with a secret code!

Class 5  •  November 18
                           Indonesian Palm-Leaf Books
This long narrow structure uses stacked pages and gets much bigger when opened! Used by many cultures for poetry or prayers, we’ll fill ours with a record of to whom and what we are thankful to have in our lives. (Just in time to share at Thanksgiving dinner!)

Class 6  •  December 2
                          Ethiopian Wish Scrolls
Learn about the scroll as a book form and make a wish to wear around your neck for our last fall class!

Each class includes materials and is $8.00.  Call 503-954-2354 to sign-up.
