Join us for a grand celebration to mark Green Bean Books' First Anniversary in the children's bookselling business! Entertainer extraordinaire, David Freleng, will perform his interactive stories on our deck from 6-9pm, Thursday, July 29th (The Last Thursday of July). You will not want to miss his creative exuberance! Come help us celebrate with stories, donuts, and laughter!
Here are three great Bookmaking Classes that will be offered on Mondays in August at Green Bean Books!
Please Sign-Up in advance to reserve your spot. Monday, August 9: Project Focus: Thing-a-majig Book Hand stitch a simple pamphlet book to be used as an image journal. Class is accompanied by the story "Janet's Thingamajig," in which a young girl collects all sorts of things that catch her eye in paper bags. Our books will serve as our paper bags; we will begin to fill them with imagery that catches our eye around the bookshop with lots of room left over to continue our "collecting" at home! 11:00 a.m. to noon. Limit to eight children entering kindergarten or first grade. $10.00 per child, $15.00 for 2 siblings, covers hour-long workshop, story, instruction and materials--along with take-home instructions to keep making books! Monday, August 16: Project Focus: Pop 'til you Drop! After enjoying some popcorn and reading a few pop-ups together, children will create their own single-spread pop-up books of hungry animals! Along the way we'll learn to use rulers for measuring and line-making, bonefolders for creasing paper, and practice cutting along a line. 11:00 a.m. to noon. Limit to eight children entering kindergarten or first grade. $10.00 per child, $15.00 for 2 siblings, covers hour-long workshop, story, instruction and materials--along with take-home instructions to keep making books! Monday, August 23: Project Focus: Accordion Book This favorite structure resembles the instrument after which it was named and can be read backwards or forwards. Learn to fold like the pros to create an accordion book and brainstorm about how to fill it. Project will be accompanied by a story and accordion music during the work session. 11:00 a.m. to noon. Limit to eight children entering kindergarten or first grade. $10.00 per child, $15.00 for 2covers hour-long workshop, story, instruction and materials--along with take-home instructions to keep making books! From the instructor: I am former preschool teacher who is currently working towards a post-baccalaueate degree in Book Arts at Portland's Oregon College of Art and Craft. With a background as a book artist as well as an educator, I strive to make my bookmaking classes as much about content as structure. Each structure is accompanied by a story, as well as time to make and fill the book. In the end, on top of strengthening an array of problem solving and fine-motor skills, each child has created both an original book and piece of art that gets him or her thinking outside the codex--and the frame. This concept is the basis for the academic field of book arts, and, I believe, a wonderful amalgam craft for any age group that fosters creativity, literacy and pride. -Sarah Fagan Join Joy Lai at Green Bean Books as she shares children's stories in Mandarin!

Thank you everyone for coming! We read The Magic Gourd by local author, Baba Wagué Diakité.Then the music of Mali drifted on the deck as we painted some "mud cloths" of our own design. Mud cloth or Bogolanfini (“Bo-ho-lahn-FEE-nee”) is made by the Bambara people of Mali. They dye fabric brown and black and paint lines, circles, zigzags, and oval shapes with a special mud. If you want to learn more about mud cloths you can check out this wonderful interactive web site from the Smithsonian Museum. We also started filling in our passports this week! Come and join us next week! Call or drop by to sign-up!
