Join us for a crafty Papertoy Monster Making Workshop on Thursday, February 24th 4:30-5:30pm.  You will get to construct imaginative and elaborate paper monsters to take home with you!  Origami and monster lovers, this is your event!  Because of the intricacy levelof some of the monsters, this event is best for ages 8 to adults.  This event is completely free, but please call to reserve a spot, 503-954-2354.

From the instructor:
I am former preschool teacher and recently completed a post-baccalaureate degree in Book Arts at Portland’s Oregon College of Art and Craft. With a background as a book artist as well as an educator, I strive to make my bookmaking classes as much about content as structure. Each structure is accompanied by a story, as well as time to make and fill the book. In the end, on top of strengthening an array of problem solving and fine-motor skills, each child has created both an original book and piece of art that gets him or her thinking outside the codex--and the frame. This concept is the basis for the academic field of book arts, and, I believe, a wonderful amalgam craft for any age group that fosters creativity, literacy and pride. I‘ve enjoyed the classes I’ve taught at Green Bean since the summer and look forward to more this winter!

Green Bean Books is now providing excellent multicultural books for sale and display in the the Mercy Corps Action Center in Downtown Portland.  If you haven't already been, go check out this unbelievably fascinating place!  The Action Center offers multimedia exhibits which allow visitors to deepen their understanding of the underlying causes of poverty, oppression and human suffering around the globe with the hope that knowledge breeds action and change.  It's also a great place for school field trips.  Go see for yourself!

Local Author Beth Zappitello has written another delightful tale about our country’s favorite White House dog.  In First Dog, Dog travels the world in search of the perfect home.  This time in, First Dog’s White House Christmas, Dog  invites his pals to a very special holiday party at the White House.  Each of his international guests brings the gifts and symbols that represent their country’s holiday customs. Bear is back, and as big a curmudgeon as ever! Bear was fussy about house-guests in Bonny Becker's EB White Read Aloud Award-Winning book, A Visitor for Bear.  Now in Becker’s latest book, A Bedtime for Bear, Bear simply can’t sleep without a glass of water, a snug nightcap, a fluffed pillow, and total silence!  Bonny Becker will visit Green Bean Books on Saturday, November 6th at 1pm to read her new sensational book, A Bedtime for Bear.  She will also help children decorate their own adorable beds to tuck their own bears or mice into at night!  You will not want to miss this spectacular event!  Call ahead to make sure you get a spot.
