Bookmaking classes for
Kindergartners and First Graders at
Green Bean Books!
3:30-4:30pm, every other Thursday this winter starting January 6
limit four children per class
(second class same day 2:20-3:20pm if enough demand!)
$8.00 per child, per class. Hour long class includes a story and all
materials to make and fill a different book structure each week.

Pop-Up Book
A few cuts is all it takes! We’ll
make an amazing pop up page
and take home instructions
to make more.
Class 2 • January 20
Spin That Wheel
This book spread contains a wheel--or a
volvelle, that spins. Three images you
create on the wheel appear in a window
as you spin it!
Class 3 • February 3
Lift-the-Flap
We’ll make dream houses with doors
and windows that open to reveal
whatever tickles our fancies.
*** Find out how to bind the first three
structures together into a book!
Class 4 • February 17
Rainy Day Idea Cards
Create flashcards with ideas of how to spend
a rainy Portland afternoon, decorate with
rubber stamps, and wrap in a raindrop-shaped
pouch!
Class 5 • March 3
A Perfectly Normal Book
(with Secret Pockets... shh!)
This accordion book structure contains
pockets for storing drawings, notes,
and little treasures.
Class 6 • March 17
Feature Presentation
(a Movie Theater Book)

For our grand winter finale, we’ll create a
story that moves with the turn of a handle!

From the instructor:
I am former preschool teacher and recently completed a post-baccalaureate degree in Book Arts at Portland’s Oregon College of Art and Craft. With a background as a book artist as well as an educator, I strive to make my bookmaking classes as much about content as structure. Each structure is accompanied by a story, as well as time to make and fill the book. In the end, on top of strengthening an array of problem solving and fine-motor skills, each child has created both an original book and piece of art that gets him or her thinking outside the codex--and the frame. This concept is the basis for the academic field of book arts, and, I believe, a wonderful amalgam craft for any age group that fosters creativity, literacy and pride. I‘ve enjoyed the classes I’ve taught at Green Bean since the summer and look forward to more this winter!
